Job Description:

Position Summary: Data entry clerks are responsible for accessing patient, customer, billing and test information into the laboratory information system. The information is typed and accepted into the system via a 10-key or electronic interface installed with the CPL client. Accuracy is important in this process because it is the basic process on which all laboratory activities (testing, reporting, billing, etc …) are based due to the risk of confidential information and the potential to violate federal law as a whole. Scope: Comprehensive for the quality of laboratory services by providing accurate information based on multiple processes. Mainly laboratory information systems that require basic computer skills such as keyboards, CRTs and printers perform data entry on mainframes. Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information related to the laboratory. Adheres to all laboratory procedures and regulations. Effectively communicates with managers, colleagues and to some extent customers through written, oral, face-to-face, telephone and computer methods. Ability to work as a team member in a production environment.

Protected health information (PHI) is regularly used for this role. Employees are expected to be trained on appropriate security measures and to adhere to all privacy and security standards, as well as strict confidentiality. Employees approach PHI only when they have to perform job duties.

Read:

Minimum - High School Diploma or GED

Preferred - Medical Assistant / Medical Terminology Training

Experience: Data entry experience in the production environment, in a laboratory / healthcare setting, but not required.

Skills: Minimum - at least 60 wpm typing skills; Skill with 10 keys

Reporting Relationship: Reports to the Supervisor.

Physical demand: Longer seating capacity is required at the data entry station using keyboards, CRTs and other peripheral laboratory equipment. The ability to change focus centers and the need to focus on CRT from documents. The ability to sit and employ in ergonomic positions and methods is essential to prevent repetitive movement or stress injuries. Requires some pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching shoulder height, pinching with both hands, pinching with thumb and forefinger, arm and wrist.

Environmental Demand: Operates in a temperature controlled environment with constant exposure to biological and chemical hazards. Fire and safety equipment must be operated or other safety measures must be followed in case of an emergency. May need to work with time constraints and crisis situations.

Job No. 02 (Lab Assistant)

Post: Lab Assistant

Summary of Circumstances: Ensuring sample integrity by strictly maintaining and processing all laboratory samples, following laboratory procedures. The information serves as a resource for sampling and testing. Adheres to departmental policies and procedures, including departmental programs, quality control, quality assurance and safety.

Prepares laboratory samples for exits / locations designed prior to laboratory analysis and testing. Unpack patterns for branches or ports and routes can be typed in a wide variety of fields. Prepares all samples received for testing in designated laboratory units or areas such as staging, labeling and distribution of samples. Prepares samples of additional samples for storage and solves problems and documents. Other tasks are assigned.

Principle Responsibilities:

  • Uses technical skills and capabilities to properly manage and process samples.
  • Follows laboratory procedures for sample processing
  • Accurately identifies tubes, containers, transport medium and storage temperatures suitable for each test type.
  • The sample processing supervisor will consult with a technician or pathologist to determine sample acceptability and take appropriate action when necessary.

Experience:

Minimum - Training or experience in sample collection and / or processing

Preferred - 1-2 years of relevant experience in clinical laboratory, data entry or production.

Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with laboratory users in the laboratory and at all levels. Ability to read and write.

Reporting Relations: Reports to the sample processing supervisor or other designated supervisor.

Physical Requirements: Light is required to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Manipulation of tools, objects and equipment using the following physical movements is required: pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching to shoulder height, holding with both hands, turning with thumb and forefinger, hands and wrists, climb up, lift, lift down, and reach down. Requires coordination of two or more physical activities on a daily basis. Visual discrimination of color, shape, size, and mobility is required on a daily basis. Requires the ability to hear audible alarms on temperature monitoring equipment and automatic analyzers.
